Arica, Chile. Tuesday 12th August 2014.
The third event on the 2014 APB World Tour is about to get underway in the Chilean seaside town of Arica, and the forecast for the 10-day window is shaping up incredibly with solid swell expected during the first week of the 10 day waiting period.
Last years event saw jaw-dropping action with 10-foot bombs exploding onto the infamous reefs of El Gringo, and the action is set to be just as fierce this year with a stellar line up of starts in the field.
APB Tour leader Jared Houston (Sth Africa) has been in devastating form in 2014 with a mind blowing last minute victory in Brazil and is poised to capture his first world championship in 2014 should the cards fall in his favor.
“ I am trying not to think about it that much,” said Jared.
“ I need to narrow my focus back to riding waves and winning heats here in Chile,” he added.
Hot on his heels are four former world champions.
Ben Player (Aust)
Pierre Louis Costes (France)
Uri Valadao (Brazil)
Amaury Lavernhe (Reunion Isle)
Arica has long been the jewel in the crown for the World Bodyboarding Tour and its heaving slabs offer a platform that lends itself to high performance riding.
APB Manger Alex Leon explains.
“Over the years this break has pushed the sport to new levels. When you get a wave like this and the worlds best combined, it’s a match made in heaven” said Leon.
“These guys drive each other so hard that inevitably someone does something that raises the bar, it’s an exciting venue and always comes through with the goods,” he added.
The check-in and press conference for the event will be held at the Boulevarde Arica at 3:00pm Thursday 14th August and ALL competitors are asked to attend.
This is the 11th year of the event and the man behind the contest is local promoter and surf shop owner Cristian Peralta, AKA “Tomate”.
Despite the region being heavily affected by a recent earthquake, Cristian was able to garner support from the local government to bankroll the event.
The Arica Chilean Challenge is the first of two events in Chile with the Antofagasta Bodyboard Festival following directly after.
Wildcards will be announced tomorrow following the local trials event.
