30 AUGUST 2014
Day five of the 2014 APB Antofagasta Bodyboard Festival was an all-day marathon of men’s and women’s competition, running through 24 heats by the time the sun began to set on Ola La Cupula. Today’s schedule included men’s round four repercharge heats, women’s round five, men’s round five, and women’s quarterfinals. Several important storylines would arise.
The first major story of the day came in women’s round five, where #1-ranked Lilly Pollard (Australia) was eliminated from competition at the hands of current #5-ranked Sari Ohhara (Japan) and #3-ranked Jessica Becker (Brazil). Ohhara controlled the heat to take the win, while Becker use a pair of key priority blocks against Pollard in the closing minutes of the heat to secure second place and knock out the tour points leader.
The men’s round five heats would have no shortage of big events to follow, including the explosion of nine point rides in heat two. 2008 World Champion Uri Valadão dialed in a 9.80 (the highest score of the event so far) on his way to the heat win, while 20 year old Australian Lewy Finnegan nailed down a 9.25 as part of his combined heat total on his way to second. Lucas Nogueira (Brazil) scored a 9.75, but could not find a solid backup score and would come up just short of advancing.
The biggest stories coming out of the men’s division today came from round five’s heat seven where #3-ranked Jared Houston (South Africa) was eliminated from competition at the hands of heat winner Israel Salas (Brazil) and fellow South African Iain Campbell. Unfortunately, Campbell hit the reef and would have to be rushed off to a local hospital via ambulance. Iain suffered a reef gash to his right leg, just above his knee cap, that cut to the bone and required more than twenty stitches. He will be out of the water for the next fifteen days, and will not be able to continue on in the competition.
Finally, wrapping up today’s schedule of competition was the women’s quarterfinals. Quarter one was a match-up between Japanese riders, with Sari Ohhara defeating Ayaka Suzuki. 2x Women’s World Champion Soraia Rocha (Brazil) eliminated Jessica Becker in quarterfinal two. In quarter three, #2-ranked Alexandra Rinder (Canary Islands) continued her run of dominant performances by defeating Minami Hatekayama (Japan). Then, in the last heat of the day, 3x Defending World Champion Isabela Sousa took out fellow Brazilian Joselane Amorim to claim the final available slot in the women’s semifinals.
The final day of competition for the Antofagasta Bodyboard Festival is on call tomorrow with a 6:30am check-in for a 7am start Antofagasta local time. The day is scheduled to start off with men’s round six and quarterfinals before going into semifinals and finals for both the men and women as we conclude the event and crown the 2014 Antofagasta champions.
