THE ANTOFAGASTA BODYBOARD FESTIVAL, CHILE 2015 – An APB Bodyboarding World Tour Contest.
Event No. 3 of the 2015 APB World Bodyboarding Tour.
30th July 2015
After two days of mobile competition at the secondary location of Budeo, the 2015 APB Antofagasta Bodyboard Festival returned to Nilda Point for day three. Men’s competition resumed in demanding 4-6 ft. waves with the occasional freak 8 ft set rolling through. Mother Nature decided to make life even more interesting for everybody, with an earthquake rumbling through during the day’s competition. The quake, which registered 4.9 on the Richter Scale, was centered at Calama here in Antofagasta, Chile.
The morning began with Mens round two non-elimination heats. Competitors dealt with bumpy conditions in the early heats, as Nilda Point shook off a case of morning sickness and the winds gradually shifted offshore. A small group of riders managed to gather solid scores, while most struggled with the conditions. Airam Cabrera (Canary Islands), 2011 World Champion Pierre Louis Costes (France), Antonio Cardoso (Portugal), Australian young gun Lewy Finnegan, South African Iain Campbell, Israel Salas (Brazil), Brahim Iddouch (Morocco), and Brazilian supergrom David Barbosa were fortunate enough to win their heats and move onto round four. Meanwhile, the remainder of the field was forced to battle it out in again round three.

Men’s competition continued with round three repecharge heats. In heat one, Brazilian Eder Luciano won the heat, with young Chilean Jonathan Chaparro beating out fellow countryman Sebastian Kreft for second place. The first major upset of the day came in heat two where 4th-ranked Diego Cabrera (Canary Islands) fell at the hands of heat winner Jacob Romero (Hawaii) and Miguel Adão (Portugal). Brazilian Lucas Nogueira and Hawaiian supergrom Tanner McDaniel advanced out of heat three, finishing first and second respectively. Following a frustrating non-elimination heat, 2-time defending World Champion Amaury Lavernhe redeemed himself by claiming the victory in heat four, while Brazilian hellman Kalani Lattanzi held off Chilean supergrom Nelson Flores to advance to the next round.

In one of the closest heats of the day, Jose Otavio (Brazil) came out on top, winning by 1.55 points. 17 year old ChileanYoshua Toledo also advanced through the heat, narrowly edging out one of Chile’s top veteran competitors Renato Arellano. Renato only needed a minimal score of 4.21 to overtake Yoshua but, unfortunately, he just ran out of time. The next big upset came in heat six where 11th-ranked Alex Uranga (Basque) was bumped from the field of competition by young Chilean Matias Dias (2nd) and 2008 World Champion Uri Valadão (1st). Chilean young gun Sacha Damjanic was the victor in heat seven, with Nicholas Chiara (Argentina) finishing second. Wrapping up round three and closing out competition for the day, South African Jared Houston recovered from a shocking non-elimination round performance to take the heat eight win, with Sergio Luis (Brazil) also advancing on to the next round with a second place finish.
As is standard procedure following the non-elimination and repercharge rounds, the Men’s division will be re-seeded for round four. Mens, Women’s, and Pro Junior competitors are on call for 7:45am local time tomorrow morning.
