TANNER MCDANIEL DOMINATES DAY ONE OF PRO JUNIOR AT ITACOATIARA

THE ITACOATIARA PRO, BRASIL 2015 – An APB Bodyboarding World Tour Contest.

Event No:1 of the 2015 APB World Bodyboarding Tour.

3rd July 2015

The 2015 APB Itacoatiara Pro Brazil presented by Toyota SGA kicked off competition, today, with the new Pro Junior division. The big story of the day quickly became the 16 year old Hawaiian Tanner McDaniel. In his round one heat, Tanner took control early and never really looked back. He repeated his performance in round two non-elimination action, this time registering another combined heat total of 15.50 to advance on and skip a round. Round four saw the Hawaiian supergrom put his competition into combination situation, needing two completely new high scores each, on the strength of a 9.25 wave in which Tanner got barreled and combined it with an ARS and finished with a roll. By day’s end, McDaniel had dialed in the three highest scoring waves of the day (9.25, 8.5, and an 8.0) and compiled the three highest heat totals (15.75, 15.5, and another 15.5).

The other big story for the day, which was to be expected, was the strong showing by the Brazilians on their home turf. Brazilian supergrom Socrates Santana had some of the higher wave scores and heat totals of the day. The only person that was able to slow down the young Santana was McDaniel, when the two of them squared off in the second heat of round four. Still, Socrates was able to secure second place in the heat and advance on to the quarter-finals. Other noteworthy performances came from the likes of fellow Brazilians Igor Almeida, Matheus Bastos, Jerson Luis, Miguel Medina, and Gabriel Oliveira. Rounding out the field of riders advancing to the quarterfinals was the last remaining Chilean Nelson Flores.

Competition for the Pro Junior division quarter finals and Round 1 of the Men’s division is set to resume tomorrow. We are on-call for 6:30am (Brasil) local time with a potential 7am (Brasil) start time.
