CRONULLA, SYDNEY (Tuesday, June 7, 2016): The OpenLIVE Shark Island Challenge got underway today in spectacular fashion with perfect conditions greeting the competitors in the opening round.

The notorious reef situated in the heart of Sydney didn’t disappoint with solid 8 footers & offshore winds providing the perfect platform for high performance riding.

Once again the locals showed the invites up with Shaun Pyne scoring the only perfect 10-point ride of the round when he rode through the heart of the heftiest barrel of the day.

Other standout’s included Ben Hall (Cronulla) & former world champion Ben Player (Avalon) who went blow for blow in the opening heat.

In the second heat Lachie Cramsie (Kiama) & Nick Ormerod (Kingscliff) pushed each other with Cramsie getting the better waves. Newcastle legend Garth McGregor continued his amazing comeback with some gutsy tube rides but his waves never allowed him to escape by clamping him on the exit.

Jack Baker continued the good form for the locals in heat 3 when he defeated Shaun Petersen (Wyong) and Damian King (Port MacQuarie) with perfect positioning on the peak to slingshot him through the heavy inside bowl.

Heat 4 saw Shaun Pyne (Cronulla) pick the eyes out of the 50 minute heat with several huge sets to convincingly defeat Jason Finlay (NSW) and Mitch Rawlins (Gold Coast).

And in the final heat of the day Michael Novy (Gold Coast) & George Humphries (Mandurah, WA) took on the challenge with some monster sets and thick slabs.

Tomorrow round two gets underway and despite a dropping swell, organisers are confident that conditions will be ideal for a big finish.

The event runs over two days starting at 8:00am and finishing at 1:00pm tomorrow (Wednesday).

The invitational format will include a two-round leaderboard format with a four-man final from highest ranked riders over the two rounds surfed.

The event has been waiting to run now for over 18 months. In 2015, the appropriate swells required to run the Shark Island Challenge never eventuated.
