World Bodyboarding is heading back to Portugal for the 21st edition of the oldest event on the World Bodyboarding Circuit, the Sintra Portugal Pro, between 13 and 18 September in Praia Grande.
This years event will be organized for the first time by the Association of Bodyboard and Surf Coast Sintra (ABSCS), with the support of the Municipality of Sintra attracting about 140 athletes from more than 20 diffent countries in the Open category, female, Junior and dropknee (DK) divisions.
The Sintra Portugal Pro is renowned as the only stop on the World Tour to organize all categories including Dropknee, explains João Campos, president of ABSCS:
“The Sintra Portugal Pro is a special contest with enormous prestige on APB World Circuit, for its antiquity but also the continued support for the Drop-knee division. This year, for the first time, the organisation in charge is ABSCS. Previous years were organised by the Portuguese Surfing Federation who did a great job, but we now count on the invaluable support of the local community and the amazing structure over the past 20 years that has made this event one of the most reputable in the world. ”
Sintra also marks the opening of the European triple crown, with two more events in Portugal, Nazaré and Viana do Castelo, and the final event at El Fronton in Gran Canaria.
About the size of this event, John Campos reveals that the objective of experienced machine behind this organization is so only to maintain the level of recent years:
“This is, as I said, one of the most iconic events in the history of world bodyboarding and we want to continue that heritage. Our goal is to make this championship one of the biggest sporting events in Europe in 2016, taking advantage of the best of the tradition that Sintra & Praia Grande have & the fact that we have some of the best athletes in the world. ”
A stellar line up
Among the names already confirmed for the Sintra Portugal Pro is the defending champion Pierre Louis Costes, who is in the race for his second world title (he was world champion in 2011). Pierre is a French bodyboarder who lives in Portugal for six years, he has won in Sintra twice & is a strong candidate to win the championship.
Speaking about World champions Jared Houston (South African world champion) is confirmed along with female world champion Alexandra Rinder (Canary Islands) & Dave Hubbard (Hawaii) 6 times world champion Dropknee among others.
New registrations can be made until September 12, the day before at the event site.
Portuguese riders confirmed include the national champion Hugo Pinheiro, as well as Manuel Centeno and Antonio Cardoso to name a few.
In women’s competition, national and European champion Joana Schenker and ISA world champion Teresa Almeida will also hit the waves of Praia Grande.
The Sintra Portugal Pro is the fifth event on the APB World men’s Tour, the second for the female World Tour and the only event confirmed on the world Drop-knee circuit.
