Mafoos Lombard Wins the Digicape Tand Invitational 2017

Strand Local Mafoos Lombard Wins the Digicape Tand Invitational 2017

Mafoos Lombard beat South Africa’s best bodyboarders amidst 6 foot waves in the 7th edition of the Digicape Tand Invitational.

Competitors arrived in Tietiesbaai early morning on Monday the 29th of May, and were greeted with sunny skies, epic waves, and great entertainment from Red Bull.

The scene was set and the competitors hit the water. The bar was set high right off the bat with quarter finalists showcasing huge aerial maneuvers and great barrel riding skills. Previous Tand Champion, Tristan Roberts, went all out with a full scale aerial assault. Big back flips and near perfect air reverse 360’s garnered him the Shaggy’s Choice Award. The Shaggy’s Choice Award is sponsored by South African bodyboarding legend, Wayne “Shaggy”Gardener, and is awarded to the best wave or craziest wipeout of the day.

The semi finals were stacked with the likes of Association of Professional Bodyboarders (APB) world tour contender Tristan Roberts, Hermanus local Dylan Le Roux, trialist wildcard Andrew Raath, and 2016 Tand finalist Charles Pass. Mark McCarthy and Andre Botha were on form and proved too hard to beat, knocking Raath and Pass out of the competition. After his quarter final performance, all eyes were on Tristan Roberts as semi final number two hit the water. Tristan was not able to keep up the same rhythm and was taken out by Henk Esterhuysen’s expert riding, and Matthew ‘Mafoos’ Lombard’s clinical back flips.

The final saw two times world champion Andre Botha, ex APB world tour campaigner Mark McCarthy, local Henk Esterhuysen, and National Champion Mafoos Lombard fighting it out for the 2017 Digicape Tand Invitational title.

Mafoos was able to find two high scoring waves early in the heat, putting him in pole position. Botha didn’t let up and was able to get two good waves putting himself just behind Mafoos. McCarthy and Henk played the waiting game and found their rhythm in the last 10 minutes of the final. McCarthy scored himself an excellent 8.83 with a huge air forward 360, setting himself in good contention for the win needing only a 5.94 to take the competition out. Henk managed to secure a high score of 7.63, only needing one more good wave to clinch the win. But as the timer ticked down, Mafoos was left at the top of the pack making him the winner of this year’s Digicape Tand Invitational! 2nd place went to Andre Botha, 3rd was Mark McCarthy and 4th place went to Henk Esterhuysen.

Competitors, sponsors and spectators alike, were all blessed with a beautiful day on the West Coast. The entertainment provided by Red Bull, hot coffee from Flatmountain Roasters, cold beer from Deon Bing, and amazing waves from Mother Nature, made for an enjoyable, successful day.

Robin Olivier, Managing Director at Digicape (headline sponsor for 2017) had this to say about the day, “Well done on a fantastic event. I was very impressed and thoroughly enjoyed the vibe. It really is a great occasion, especially when mother nature plays her role. My only regret was having to rush back to Cape Town before the finals.”
