Viana will be the bodyboarding capital of the world from September 26th to October 1st

The world’s elite travel to Viana World Bodyboard Championship

Surf Clube de Viana is organizing, for the second consecutive year, the Viana World Bodyboard Championship. This world tour event returns to the Arda beach between September 26th and October 1st. From the field of competitors already confirmed, we highlight Pierre-Louis Costes, 2016 APB World Champion, Iain Campbell, current ranking leader and winner of the 2016 edition, and the Hawaiian Mike Stewart. For this event of the APB World Tour, the organization foresees good results, and it presents two new initiatives: the event is a part of the European Week of Sport and will host the 1st Bodyboard Performance Clinic.

Last year’s event that ran in the costal waters of Viana was considered the best of the tour, which gives the organizers “an extra motivation” for this year. However, the success of the event will depend, in large, on the quality of the waves, which were awesome in the 2016 edition.

A considerable aspect of this APB World Tour event is that, it will be part of the European Week of Sport. In this context, bodyboarding classes will be given under the Nautical in Schools Project, which will happen at Arda Beach, while the event is undergoing. At the beach various equipments will also be available in order to provide and expand the range of activities and experiences.

“Our intention is to try to provide the children a unique experience with the World Bodyboarding Stars,” says João Zamith, president of the SCV.

Another of the novelties of this edition is the realization of the 1st Bodyboard Performance Clinic, which will happen on the 26th of September. The event will serve as a forum to discuss key issues, to share experiences and best practices on high-performance bodyboarding. Well-known bodyboarders, such as Mike Stewart and Iain Campbell, will address several themes: such as how to prepare a world tour; sponsorships; management of sports careers; physical preparation and nutrition.

On the coast of Viana, the Men’s World Tour will be disputing a prize purse of US$ 25,000 and four thousand points, and in the Pro Junior Division, the total prize money is US$ 2.500.

The event will also be broadcasted live on the SCV website (

The Viana World Bodyboard Championship event is the second of the “European Triple Crown”. The European leg will kick off in Sintra, between September 12th and 17th, and will finish in Nazaré from October 3rd to 12th.

The ninth event of the APB World Tour 2017, counts with the support of the Municipal Council of Viana do Castelo and the Porto and Northern Portugal Regional Tourism Office.
