Campbell: Prepares for West Beach Warfare, Port Alfred

In a months time, 2018 APB Qest world tour will start in South Africa for the first time at the West beach Ware are, Port Alfred Men’s $5000 1 star event 31 March to 2 April over the Easter weekend. APB world champion Iain Campbell and (15) Tristen Roberts will be competing on home soil for the first time. This will also be vital for the local riders to earn valuable points and prize money.

Iain Campbell:

How’s your preparation going before the for this event ?

After Hawaii I have got home and have started training. Although this is the first event of the year I will be more focused on setting up a good fitness level for May when the GSS events will run. This will be a perfect event for me to do in order to see what needs work on and if Philip Nel (from Le Roux and Nel Biokinetics) and I are on the right path. I am looking forward to compete in Port Alfred as well as get the ball rolling with competition. I’m really excited to have this event back here this year and it should bring an unreal group of bodyboarders back to the West Beach Warfare.

What is exciting about this event and what will it be like to competing back home.
The first event is going to be amazing. To have our first ever APB World Tour event at home in Port Alfred is insane. I know that Clinton Millard and his team have worked tirelessly to get this event set up and to have that here is massive. Port Alfred is an insane left handed wedge that has huge potential for some crazy waves and scores to be produced. I know that this year it is going to bring a good group of bodyboarders as well as spectators to the town which should look good for us having the event there for the years to come.

Your new sniper models, what can you tell us about them ?
They are different to my previous boards. Sniper Bodyboards and I have worked together to give the world a dynamic yet versatile board that offers great down the line speed as well as pop for some great time in the air and in the barrel. I have been fortunate to get the boards shaped by Dan Sivess and in the Broady Asia Indonesian factory for the stock boards. These boards will come out with a number of different colour ways and styles as well as have the PP and NRG cores to cater for anyone, in any condition.

Any injuries from your recent trip to Hawaii?
I am fortunate to not be carrying any injuries into the start of this year. I have been battling with a small shoulder injury that has kept popping up but Philip and his team have got it under control. We are working towards stretching and making the shoulders more flexible throughout these first couple weeks.

Who will you be looking out for in this event?
When I compete back in South Africa there are always so many guys you have to look out for. Of course all the guys that are on tour are a threat but there is also guys up the coast and in Cape Town that could be a threat. I just treat all the riders the same and try to go out and win heats. It worked for me last year so I don’t really want to change that at all.

Tristan Roberts :

Are you stoked to be competing back home?
It’s always good to compete back home . It has been a while since I have done so and I sure am looking forward to it . Looking forward to good times over in Port Alfred

This is an early start for the year, if you had to win this event will this give confidence into the gram slams event ?
Yeah it would be good to start off with a win but I’m just looking forward to putting on the competitors rashvest again and hopefully the waves allow us to have a good time out there .

what do you think of the wave at west beach, Port Alfred?

I haven’t got west beach really good, but there’s definitely loads of potential . It will be all up to Mother Nature to see what she allows us to make the most of.
who will you be looking out for in this event
Last years west beach warfare and 2017 world champion, Iain Campbell , is definitely one to look out for. Other than him, whoever is in my heat as there are so many rippers in SA.

The event will also have a development clinic with some of the top body boarders giving a hand and also give local inspiring riders to compete in other divisions for awesome prizes
Divisions: Boys, juniors, ladies, men’s, master and drop knee.
