The Kiama Bodyboard King Pro is set to commence at the end of the month and is jam packed full of activities. The event will be the third event on the World Grand Slam Series following on from Arica Chile and Itacoatiara Brazil. The top 24 athletes will make their way to the beautiful NSW south coast town of Kiama and joining them will be the world qualifying athletes and the Women’s World Series competitors.
It has been 5 years since Australia played host to the World Tour and APB Chief Alex Leon couldn’t be more excited. – “I am beyond stoked to finally have Australia play host to the World Tour in our backyard. We have worked extremely hard for years to bring the tour back to Australia and with the great help of Surfing NSW and the tourism and government ministers we can finally showcase our sport to the Australian community and hope it helps the development and participation of the sport of Bodyboarding in Australia.”
The NSW south coast region is renowned for having some of the world’s best Bodyboarding locations and the APB plan to stage some of the Men’s Grand Slam in different wave locations as a mobile event which include Shark Island (Cronulla), Mystics & Kiama Wedge (Kiama) and Nuggan Point (Bawley). These 4 locations are responsible for producing some of the worlds most exciting high performance extreme content in the sport and with the new WGS format being brought into fruition this year there is going to be no shortage of high action and extreme wave riding by the top athletes in the sport.
On the 4th & 5th August there will be an array of activities taking place at Surf Beach Kiama which will include the Pro Junior Series event, coaching clinics with 9 x World Champion Mike Stewart from Hawaii and the Australian Women’s professional – Lilly Pollard (The Bodyboard Academy). There will also be the “Fling 4 Bling” tow out air show pending wave size. Event industry sponsors Science and ISS will also have a display range of products for testing by the public. i98FM will be live broadcasting with prizes and giveaways on offer for all spectators.
