APB QEST Competition Returns to Viana do Castelo
Viana do Castelo is a special place for competitive bodyboarding, with some calling it one of the bodyboarding ‘capitals of the world’.
Portugal’s Arda Beach will host the Viana World Bodyboard Championship QEST Men’s event and also the Pro Junior World Championship this coming week, between the 26th and 30th of September. The next APB World Junior Champion will also be crowned, and valuable qualification points for the APB World Tour 2019 will be up for grabs.
2018 APB World Champion and winner of the Viana Pro’s last two editions Iain Campbell will be back for the event, looking to continue his good form in Portgual following his equal 2nd position with Pierre Louis-Costes at the Sintra Pro last week due to intense fog. Iain Campbell adds that competing in Viana is special to him because the City “really invites all bodyboarders to come back and have fun. In Viana we are spoiled with some of the best hospitality anywhere on tour”.
The swell and weather forecast for the event looks good at this point in time and organizers are happy with what they are seeing. João Zamith, President of the Viana Surf Club commented that this “demonstrates that the wager of organizing this event in late September is already a successful one”.
Iain Campbell, who is staying at the local High Performance Surf Center is excited to compete in Viana again and watch the Pro Junior World Championship. In his own words he “can hardly wait to see what they are bringing to this event.”
APB expectations are also high for this critical QEST event. APB World Tour Manager Terry McKenna comments:
“The connection between this city and bodyboarding is historical, not only because it hosted the first ever world tour event outside of Hawaii so many years ago, but also because the beauty of this place and the quality of the waves are really beneficial to an event like this. The SCV team is one of the most professional we work with on the APB World Tour.”
The Viana World Bodyboard Championships takes place as part of European Sports Week and the popularity of European Sports Week in Viana is growing.
European Sports Week is an initiative from the European Union and it is all about promoting more activity and sport for Europeans. The #BeActive campaign intends to promote all over Europe, sports and physical activity associated to health and well-being.
This year’s event was made possible as a result of a partnership between the city’s school councils, the Municipality of Viana do Castelo and the SCV, which will provide a unique experience on the beach for 600 students as well.
This year’s event will be live streamed through Facebook and YouTube and the APB is looking forward to friends and fans all around the world tuning in to all the action.
