ITACOATIARA, BRAZIL (Wednesday, June 12, 2019): ItacoatiaraPro hosts APB Social Project bodyboard clinic for local children.
The world’s best bodyboarders descended on Itacoatiara Beach today not to compete for glory, but to share the simple joys of bodyboarding with local children as part of the APB Social Projects organized by the Itacoatiara Pro team.

The waves were certainly the right type for introducing a new generation of bodyboarders to the sport, with barely 1 foot of swell reaching the beach today. The sun was shining bright and the local kids were keen to learn from the world’s best, so the small waves provided more than enough opportunities for the joy of bodyboarding to be shared.

2017 World Champion Iain Campbell (South Africa) joined in on the fun and was pleased to see so many young people enjoying bodyboarding for the first time:

“It was sick to see how stoked all the local kids were today. Just riding a few shorebreaks with the riders on tour was enough to see them really enjoy themselves.”

“These APB Social Projects are really what it is all about – bringing the joy of bodyboarding to young people around the world and sharing the stoke!”

All riders in the competition were on hand to help and share their tips and techniques with the kids at Itacoatiara today, and the enthusiasm of the local kids for the shore break waves kept the riders busy. Joshua B. Kirkman (Australia/Sweden), was clearly exhausted after the day’s clinic.

“I think I had Brazil’s 2030 world champion in the water with me today. This little guy was so keen and totally understood what to do, despite my Portuguese being very poor. He was fearless and just didn’t stop!”

“Today was great for the kids and also for me, as I am still trying to get my surf fitness back after being out of the water a while back home in Sweden.”

Officials will be meeting at Itacoatiara Beach tomorrow morning to assess conditions and make a call about commencing the Main Event of competition. There is predicted to be a small increase in swell, much like the conditions that were on hand for the trials, so it is looking like either Thursday or Friday will see competition begin. There is a larger swell forecast for the middle of next week, but it arrives very close to the end of the event window.

Technical Director for the APB Terry McKenna had this update for everyone interested in following the live stream of the event:

“We are looking forward to getting the Main Event of the ItacoatiaraPro under way either Thursday or Friday and look forward to seeing everyone tune in to the livestream for all the action. Despite the forecast showing relatively small waves for the event, I think we are going to see some explosive bodyboarding that should keep everyone online entertained!”
