GALDAR, CANARY ISLANDS (Friday, October 18, 2019): ROBERTS AND PLC REMAIN IN TITLE RACE.
CANARY ISLANDERS READY TO TAKE THE CROWN. GOLDEN BOOM FOR TANNER MCDANIEL
A mammoth day of competition took place at El Fronton today as organizers and riders raced against the tides and fading light to complete the Men’s Trials, Women’s Semi Finals and almost the complete First Round of the Men’s Main Event in a building swell.
ROBERTS AND PLC REMAIN IN TITLE RACE
Sammy Morretino (HAWAII) was unable to continue his campaign towards a world title today at El Fronton. In a heat dominated by some heavy low-tide conditions, the young Hawaiian was unable to find the rides necessary to progress against Iain Campbell (SOUTH AFRICA) and a very much in form Mack Crilley (HAWAII). Morretino was able to find some decent rides to launch clean rollos and inverts, but it was the larger barreling righthanders that both Crilley and Campbell focused their energies on that were the difference.
Pierre Louis Costes (FRANCE) continued his march towards a 3rd APB world title in a heat that was dominated by Australia’s George Humphreys, who launched what was possibly one of the biggest air rollos in competition history to earn himself a strong 8.33 and one of the higher heat score totals of the day. PLC managed to find a strong barrel on the right and some challenging barrles on the left to do enough to keep distance between himself and 3rd place rider Kevin Orihuela from the Canary Islands.
Tristan Roberts took to the sky as usual to keep his world title dreams alive, launching some strong backflips to stay ahead of local rider Dailos Rodriguez (CANARY ISLANDS) and Patrick Orr (HAWAII).
As the situation stands, Tristan Roberts needs to win the event while PLC cannot finish any higher than 5th. Anything else will not do for the young South African. With a full day of competition scheduled for tomorrow, only time will tell who will be the eventual champion for 2019.
CANARY ISLANDERS READY TO TAKE THE CROWN
While many high performing Canary Islanders were unable to progress from the trials to the main event here at Fronton this year, there are a handful who are making their presence and threat well and truly felt at this year’s event. Diego Cabrera, Sergio Quevedo and Dailos Rodriguez are all still alive in competition at Fronton, and all are still very much a threat moving forward. Their performances today in the strong conditions at El Fronton, finding the tube time necessary to eliminate regular competitors on the APB Tour.
Their local knowledge is clearly an advantage and, in addition to Amaury Lavernhe (FRANCE) who also calls Gran Canaria home (and who posted the highest heat score total of the day), these riders are not going to be beaten easily as we move into the ‘business-end’ of competition.
Expect to see a local rider on the podium this year at El Fronton.
GOLDEN BOOM FOR TANNER MCDANIEL
Tanner McDaniel (HAWAII) has gone and done it again, and exactly in the way you would expect. The young Hawaiian (who recently relocated to California) was awarded a perfect 10-point ride at El Fronton today for a deep barrel on the lefthander followed by a looping air reverse. The crowd was already going wild for the tube, but the air reverse sent them into overdrive.
All of this in a heat against 2018 World Champion Jared Houston (SOUTH AFRICA) and multiple world champion Jeff Hubbard (HAWAII). There really was a sense of the ‘changing of the guard’ in this performance by McDaniel today at El Fronton, who narrowly missed out on a world title last year, and who was in such blistering form at the Arica Cultura Bodyboard Festival earlier this year.
McDaniel faces up against world title contender Pierre Louis Costes (FRANCE) and Australians Lewy Finnegan and Josh Kirkman in his Round 4 heat. Expect him to be performing at his best and putting on a great show.
There will be an early start to the Fronton King tomorrow in Galdar, with officials calling a 7am check-in for a possible 7:30 am start to make the most of good tide and swell in the morning. There will certainly be a break in competition during low tide tomorrow with an expected finish to the event and crowning of champions in the late afternoon.
